What Is a Platform Lift?
A platform lift is a motorized lift that carries a user — standing, seated, or in a wheelchair — between two levels. Unlike a stairlift, the user does not need to transfer from their wheelchair. Unlike a full elevator, a platform lift requires no hoistway, no pit excavation, and no machine room — making it significantly more affordable and faster to install.
Platform lifts come in two main types. A Vertical Platform Lift (VPL) travels straight up and down between levels — ideal for raised porches, decks, split-level entrances, and floor-to-floor transitions. An Inclined Platform Lift (IPL) travels along an existing staircase at an angle, carrying a wheelchair user between levels while the staircase remains fully usable by others.
